Make a difference TODAY (3/19) with San Diego Craft Beer

CAM00785

I used to volunteer with a woman named Carolyn Kates who works at Whole Foods in Hillcrest in San Diego.  She posted a link to a Whole Planet Foundation event at Hess Brewing in North Park on March 19th and I suspect that her big heart is a reason this thing I’m going to tell you about is happening.  If you aren’t going to Meeting of the Minds that night to see resident bad-ass Kelly Bennett do her thing, I can give you a FREE CRAFT BEER!  Well, some of you, anyway.  I’ll explain at the bottom of the post.  Here’s the deal…

The photo above is Feza, read about her story here. I will be celebrating an amazing woman and a great relationship, so I can’t make it to either Meeting of the Minds or the benefit at Hess for the Whole Planet.  And I know that sometimes the percent of San Diegans living in poverty is staggering enough to make us forget how tragic other parts of the world are in this regard.  In fact, here’s a recent study specific to the San Diego region, which suggests it is worse here–especially for women–than even the national reports like this one.

And this is where places who care about more than the bottom line come in.  I am somewhat loud about my support of San Diego Craft Beer and quite frankly this effort by Hess is another example of why.  They fought for months to get open in North Park, have been fantastic neighbors since being open and have activated an entire portion of our community.  I was just there tonight and ran into a range of people I know who were responsibly enjoying the environment.  And at least two conversations I was partially privy to involved scheming to make the region better.  Heck, I met a social worker named Kim that reminded me for a moment how vitally important people who care for no reason really are in this world. Thank you, Kim.  On top of all that, Hess is doing this event on March 19th to help raise money for women who really need it and are willing to put the microlending proceeds to great use.  So let’s get to how you can help.

HAVE A FREE BEER!

Seriously, that’s how you can help.  Go to Hess on Wednesday (3/19).  While supplies last you will get a free beer when you buy a beer.  All you have to do is email me at opassons@gmail.com for the password or DM me on Twitter.  Heck, if we are Facebook friends you can message me too.  Please only do it if you are going to go because I’d like every beer I purchased to find a nice comfy home. Yes, I’m assuming your friends will also have a beer, which will be good for the cause.

SEE WHAT HAPPENED HERE?!?

One person had an idea to help some people.  She got her work involved.  Then she got a brewery involved.  Then she got some friends involved.  Then the friends got friends involved.  And all you have to do is something you’d probably do anyway.  Go have a Grazias on nitro and thank me later for the recommendation.  Okay, I gotta run.

REMEMBER: The only way to get the free beer at Hess on 3/19 is to email or contact me for the password and then go buy a beer.  You will have to show it to the people behind the bar on your phone – so bring that too.  Thanks for helping out.
